Inside Google's AGI Strategy: Reading Between the Lines of the Hassabis Interview

When Demis Hassabis sits down with the Financial Times, people pay attention. As the head of Google DeepMind—the merged entity combining Google Brain and DeepMind that now functions as “the engine room of Google”—he commands one of the largest concentrations of AI talent on the planet.

“Others who’ve had more aggressive timelines maybe are updating to be a little bit longer and a little bit more realistic... things always take a little bit longer than one assumes, even at the pace that we’re all going at.”
This is diplomatic code for: the aggressive predictors are quietly backing off their most extreme claims, while Hassabis’s estimate has held steady. The convergence is happening toward his timeline, not away from it.
When I wrote about AGI timelines earlier this year, I noted how rapidly estimates were compressing. In 2020, the median AI researcher predicted AGI by 2060. By 2023, that had collapsed to the 2030s. Now Hassabis is saying 2030 at earliest with 50% probability.
The pattern here is crucial: as we get closer to transformative AI, the optimists and pessimists converge. That convergence point—somewhere in the late 2020s to early 2030s—is increasingly looking like reality rather than speculation.
The Competitive Landscape: What Praise Reveals
The most striking moment in this interview came when Hassabis was asked what competitors are doing well:
“What Anthropic’s doing with code is very interesting with their Claude Code. There’s a lot of excitement around that in the developer market. We’re pleased with the performance of Gemini 3. But they’ve done something special there.”
Stop and consider what just happened. The head of Google DeepMind—with its 2 billion AI Overview users, 650 million monthly Gemini users, and self-described position as “the most used AI product in the world”—just publicly praised Anthropic’s code capabilities.
In an industry where every company claims superiority, this kind of acknowledgment is extraordinary. Hassabis wouldn’t make it unless it was undeniably true and failing to acknowledge it would damage his credibility.
This tells us several things.
First, the competition has shifted. The early chatbot wars—who has the snappiest responses, the most engaging personality—are giving way to a new battlefield: who builds AI that can do real work. Code generation is the leading edge of this transition because software development is pure cognitive labor with measurable outputs. If your AI can write better code, you can prove it.
Second, Anthropic has captured something real. Despite Google’s massive scale advantages, Claude Code has carved out mindshare with developers—the exact constituency that will determine which AI systems become embedded in the infrastructure of the future.
Third, Hassabis is playing a longer game. By acknowledging Anthropic’s strength in one domain, he’s setting up the argument that Google’s advantages lie elsewhere. Which brings us to his real strategic bet.

“What I’m excited about this year is... an assistant that travels around with you in the real world, maybe on your glasses or your phone. And I think that’s going to have some big moments in the next couple of years.”
Hassabis then mentions partnerships with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster on smart glasses, and notes that “maybe we were a bit too ahead of our time when we first started this 10-plus years ago at Google with the devices.”
Read that again. Google’s head of AI research is telling us that the killer app for AGI isn’t a chatbot—it’s a “universal digital assistant” that operates in the physical world, probably through wearable devices, and eventually through robotics.
This is a fundamentally different vision than what most AI discourse focuses on. While everyone debates whether GPT-5 or Claude or Gemini writes better poetry, Google is positioning for a world where AI acts, not just responds.
Consider what this requires:
Multimodal understanding. The AI needs to see, hear, and understand physical context—not just process text. Hassabis emphasizes that “Gemini, from the beginning, has been multimodal,” treating image, video, and audio as “native input and output.” This isn’t a feature addition; it’s an architectural choice that positions Google for embodied applications.
Physical world interaction. An AI assistant in your glasses needs to help you navigate real situations—reading signs, recognizing people, understanding social context, taking actions on your behalf. This is orders of magnitude more complex than answering questions in a chat window.
Robotics integration. Hassabis says robotics will have “big moments in the next couple of years.” Google owns significant robotics research through DeepMind and has been quietly developing physical AI systems. The same multimodal capabilities that power glasses-based assistants can control robotic systems.
Hardware ecosystem. Unlike OpenAI or Anthropic, Google controls a hardware ecosystem—Android phones, Pixel devices, and now partnerships with glasses manufacturers. This gives them a deployment path for embodied AI that pure software companies lack.
This strategic positioning explains why Hassabis can afford to acknowledge Anthropic’s strength in code. If the future is embodied AI operating in the physical world, being the best at generating software in a terminal window is a transitional advantage, not an enduring one.
The Startup Bubble: The Engine Room vs. The Parts Suppliers
When asked whether we’re in an AI bubble, Hassabis gave the most revealing answer I’ve seen from any industry leader:
“Multi-billion dollar seed rounds in new start-ups that don’t have a product, or technology, or anything yet does seem a little bit unsustainable. So there may be some corrections in some parts of the market.”

Earlier in the interview, he described Google DeepMind as “the kind of engine room of Google. And we’re providing the engine, which is these models, like Gemini, and Veo, and all these state-of-the-art models.”
The metaphor is precise and revealing. Google DeepMind is the engine. Everything else—the applications, the integrations, the user-facing features—are parts attached to that engine.
I’ve written before about what I call “agentrification”—the process by which AI models absorb capabilities that would have been entire companies. Every major model update includes features that eliminate the reason for dozens of startups to exist. Text-to-image used to be a company. Now it’s a checkbox. Code generation used to be a startup category. Now it’s table stakes.
Hassabis is saying this explicitly. The value is in the engine, not the parts. And when you’re building the engine, you don’t worry much about competition from parts suppliers.

Hassabis’s confidence that Google would be “fine” even if the bubble bursts tells you everything. They have the engine. The China Question: Six Months and Closing

“Maybe it’s only a matter of six months or so now. Although interestingly, some of the Chinese leaders and entrepreneurs I talked to, they feel like they’re further behind than that.”
Six months. That’s the gap Hassabis estimates between Western frontier labs and Chinese competitors. Less than the time between smartphone releases.
But then he adds a crucial qualification:
“The Chinese labs haven’t proven they can innovate beyond the frontier yet. They’re getting faster and faster at catching up to the frontier, what the frontier labs are doing. But they haven’t innovated beyond that, the next transformers or something like that.”
This is the distinction that matters. The transformer architecture powering every modern AI system came from Google. The reinforcement learning techniques that enabled ChatGPT’s capabilities were developed in Western labs. China can implement breakthroughs at remarkable speed—DeepSeek demonstrated this—but creating those breakthroughs is a different capability.
Hassabis is betting that innovation, not implementation, determines who wins the AGI race. If transformative new architectures continue coming from Western labs, the six-month implementation gap remains manageable. But if China demonstrates the ability to create fundamental advances, that calculus changes entirely.
The interview also contained an interesting observation about China’s strategic focus:
“They’re more focused on the near-term applications, what can you concretely do right now, rather than maybe these more research heavy frontier capabilities that would get you to AGI.”
This is both a statement of fact and a subtle critique. Hassabis is saying China is playing a different game—applications over research, implementation over innovation. It’s a game they can win in their market, but it may not be the game that matters for AGI.
Whether that bet proves correct remains to be seen. But the confidence with which Hassabis dismisses the DeepSeek panic as “a bit overblown” suggests Google DeepMind believes their research advantages remain substantial.
The Isomorphic Signal: What AGI Means for Human Health
There was a section of this interview that deserves far more attention than it received.
When asked about Isomorphic Labs—DeepMind’s drug discovery spinoff—Hassabis revealed they now have “about 17 programmes in total” and have secured partnerships with J&J, Eli Lilly, and Novartis. Three of the world’s best pharmaceutical companies, all working with a company founded just three years ago.
“We just announced a new deal with J&J yesterday,” Hassabis noted. “You’ll see a lot more news from us this year, first half of this year on our progress, which is going very well.”
To understand why this matters, consider traditional drug development: 10-15 years from discovery to approval, $1-2 billion per successful drug, and a 90%+ failure rate in clinical trials. The process is brutal, slow, and expensive—which is why drugs cost so much and so many diseases remain untreated.
AI is compressing the discovery phase dramatically.
AlphaFold—which won Hassabis the Nobel Prize—solved the protein folding problem that had stumped biologists for 50 years. Suddenly, researchers could predict protein structures in minutes instead of years. Isomorphic is applying similar AI approaches to the entire drug discovery pipeline: target identification, compound screening, optimization, toxicity prediction.
What used to take years now takes weeks.

Personalized medicine at scale. When AI can model individual patient biology, drugs can be tailored to specific genetic profiles. What works for one patient might not work for another—and AI could predict this in advance.
Now connect this to Hassabis’s AGI timeline.
Four to eight years to artificial general intelligence. Seventeen drug programs already underway at Isomorphic. Partnerships with the world’s top pharmaceutical companies.
If AGI arrives by 2030, we could see AI systems capable of modeling entire biological systems with unprecedented accuracy. Drug discovery that currently takes a decade could compress to a year. Diseases we’ve struggled against for generations could become treatable.
Hassabis also mentioned his new materials science lab in the UK, noting that “AI designing new materials, semiconductors, superconductors, batteries, these kind of things is going to be a huge part of the benefits AI will bring to the world.”
This is the positive case for AGI that often gets lost in discussions of job displacement and existential risk. The same intelligence that threatens cognitive employment could extend human healthspan, cure diseases that have plagued us for millennia, and fundamentally improve quality of life.
The question isn’t whether AI will transform drug discovery—it already is. The question is what happens when AGI-level intelligence is applied to understanding human biology.
The implications for human health, longevity, and the treatment of previously incurable diseases could be extraordinary. This is the future Hassabis is building toward, even as he navigates the competitive dynamics and commercial pressures of the AI race.
The Silences: What Hassabis Didn’t Say
Throughout this interview, Hassabis was careful, measured, and diplomatic. But there are conspicuous absences that reveal as much as his words.
No discussion of AI safety. In an interview touching on AGI timelines, competitive dynamics, and the future of intelligence, there was no substantive engagement with alignment problems, existential risk, or the challenge of controlling systems smarter than humans. The word “safety” appears only in passing—”we try to be role models for what responsible use of these kind of deployment of these technologies looks like.”
This is striking. Google has published extensively on AI safety. DeepMind employs serious researchers working on alignment. Yet when given a platform to discuss AGI, Hassabis chose to emphasize commercial applications, competitive positioning, and timeline estimates rather than the profound challenges of building beneficial superintelligence.
No discussion of economic disruption. The man leading the charge toward artificial general intelligence had nothing to say about what happens to human workers when that intelligence arrives. No mention of displacement, inequality, or the restructuring of economic systems that AGI would necessitate.
No discussion of governance. A handful of private companies—Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta—are racing to build the most powerful technology in human history. There was no acknowledgment that perhaps democratic institutions, governments, or citizens should have some voice in how this technology develops.
No discussion of concentration of power. If AGI arrives and Google has the best one, what does that mean for everyone else? For competitors, for nations, for individuals? This question went unasked and unanswered.
These silences aren’t accidental. They’re strategic. Hassabis is positioning Google DeepMind as the responsible, scientifically rigorous, product-focused player in this race. Raising difficult questions would complicate that narrative and potentially invite regulatory scrutiny.
But the questions don’t disappear because they go unasked. And anyone thinking seriously about AGI should be troubled by an interview that treats it primarily as a competitive and commercial matter rather than a civilizational one.
The Picture That Emerges
Let me synthesize what this interview tells us about Google’s AGI strategy and the broader competitive landscape.
Google is betting on embodied AI. While the industry focuses on chatbots and code generation, Google is positioning for a future where AI operates in the physical world—through wearables, robotics, and devices that understand real-world context. Their multimodal-first architecture and hardware ecosystem give them advantages competitors lack.
The foundation model providers will absorb startup value. Hassabis’s description of DeepMind as the “engine room” and his characterization of startup valuations as “unsustainable” tells us where the value is accruing. The wrapper startups, the thin application layers, the “AI for X” companies—they’re building on sand.
The China gap is real but narrow. Six months is a meaningful lead, but not a comfortable one. Google is betting that innovation capacity—the ability to create fundamental breakthroughs—matters more than implementation speed. That bet hasn’t been tested yet.
The timeline is converging on the late 2020s. When aggressive predictors back off and cautious estimators hold steady, the convergence point tells you something. Four to eight years—2029 to 2033—increasingly looks like when AGI arrives.
The transformative benefits are taking shape. Seventeen drug programs at Isomorphic, partnerships with J&J, Eli Lilly, and Novartis, a new materials science lab—this is what beneficial AGI could deliver. The same intelligence that threatens cognitive employment could extend human healthspan, cure diseases we’ve struggled against for generations, and create materials that transform energy and computing. This is the case for AGI that gets lost in doom-focused discourse.
The hard questions remain unaddressed. Safety, governance, economic disruption, concentration of power—the issues that will determine whether AGI benefits humanity or harms it—received no serious engagement. The people building this technology are focused on building it, not on building it wisely.
What This Means
If you’re investing in AI, understand that the value is concentrating in foundation models and the platforms that deploy them. The startup ecosystem riding on foundation model APIs is more fragile than it appears.
If you’re planning for your career, the embodied AI future Hassabis describes means physical world applications—robotics, devices, real-world AI assistance—matter more than most job disruption analyses assume. The cognitive workers threatened by ChatGPT may be followed more quickly than expected by physical workers affected by AI-enabled robotics.
If you’re in healthcare or biotech, pay close attention to what Isomorphic and similar efforts are achieving. The competitive landscape for drug discovery will look radically different when AI can compress discovery timelines by an order of magnitude. The winners will be those who integrate AI deeply into their research processes now.
If you’re a policymaker, the absence of governance discussion in this interview should concern you. The most capable AI is being built by a handful of private companies in a competitive race with minimal democratic input. Hassabis mentions governmental coordination would be needed “to create the whole of the industry” to act on safety—but there’s no evidence anyone is seriously pursuing that coordination.
And if you’re simply trying to understand what’s coming, this interview provides a window into how the people building AGI think about what they’re doing.
